Exodus 3:1 “Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of
Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of
God.”
We believe that in God’s sovereign wisdom, there are no accidents. Everything is under His control,
and He cannot be surprised by our decisions or their outcomes.
Right after Israel cried out to God for rescue, the scene shifts to Moses, who was busy and
seemingly unaware of Israel’s plight. Why was Moses tending the flock? Wasn’t he once considered
a prince of Egypt? Imagine the contrast between Moses’ former life as an Egyptian prince and his
current life as a shepherd. We know that he killed an Egyptian soldier, which led him to flee and
choose this humble existence. By this time, Moses was considered a nomadic shepherd, one who
travels from place to place with his flock.
Now, consider the timing. Was it mere coincidence that at the same time the Israelites were crying
out for help, Moses arrived at Horeb? We believe it was intentional. This means that even Moses
running to Midian was part of God’s plan for a specific purpose. If Moses hadn’t fled to Midian, he
wouldn’t have become a shepherd for his father-in-law, and he wouldn’t have come to Horeb,
where he would encounter God, who would use him to redeem His nation. Could there have been a
different outcome? I don’t think so. In God’s great plan, everything fulfills its purpose.
Nothing that happens in this world escapes God’s knowledge. He is the all-knowing God. This truth
should bring us comfort, reminding us that wherever we are right now, God knows what is
happening. He is not deaf or blind to our sadness, frustrations, or struggles in life. Though we may
be struggling now, we must fully trust in His perfect timing.
God’s timing is always beautiful and wonderfully orchestrated. By His sovereign wisdom and grace,
no matter what challenges in faith His children may face, God’s great purpose will always prevail,
and His unfailing love and guidance will always be with us.
