The Department of Science and Technology – National Capital Region (DOST-NCR), led by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., formally opened the “Pamana Agham: Siyensya sa Bawat Habi at Hibla” event on August 28, 2024, at Casa Manila, Intramuros, Manila. The event was held in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) under the leadership of Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), the Intramuros Administration, and Partnerships for Sustainability Education (PSE). The event successfully launched various projects and collaborations aimed at sustainable development and tourism.
DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Engr. Sancho A. Maborrang, emphasized the significance of enriching Filipino culture through traditional weaving. He highlighted that the integration of science, technology, and innovation does not diminish the value of these rich traditions. Instead, it enhances and deepens their meaning for the current generation, ensuring that these indigenous arts continue to thrive and remain relevant in today’s society.
DOST Secretary Solidum highlighted that the culture of weaving must be passed down to future generations, as it is an expression of the Filipino people’s inherent creativity. He noted that weaving reflects the sustainable use of natural resources, represents a vibrant aspect of Filipino culture, and symbolizes the fusion of tradition and innovation.
One of the key events during the opening ceremony was the signing of an agreement between DOST-NCR and PSE to strengthen cooperation in implementing various significant projects and initiatives for sustainability education, conducting studies on sustainability, and empowering stakeholders to fulfill the Philippines’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Additionally, DOST and DOT signed an agreement for the TourLISTA Application, a project spearheaded by DOST-MIMAROPA. The application aims to streamline the reporting and analysis of tourism-related data, serving as a guide for the government in developing priorities, plans, and projects in the tourism sector. This initiative is part of the Smart and Sustainable Cities and Communities Program, which seeks to provide smart solutions for cities and communities. DOST-XI also formally handed over the Halal Modules to DOT during the ceremony.
The program also included an awarding ceremony for the winners of the “Sining Siyensya” contest, which was participated in by Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in collaboration with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-NCR. The opening ceremony concluded with the “Ang Pamanang Habi” fashion show.
