One of the many reasons for a person’s disappointment is the belief that he/she deserves the best. When confronted with the reality that life doesn’t always go their way, they may either self-destruct or lose the will to live, becoming impatient with themselves and those around them.
The Bible provides us with the truth that leads people to become humble and rely more on the Creator of the world. This provides better appreciation of life. Genesis 2:7 offers insight into the origin of Man. It wasn’t through evolution, the big bang, or accidents that created Man. Rejecting these ideas is crucial because their arguments lack substance. How could a mindless, powerless single cell cultivate and make itself grow? It can’t!
The bible says that “the LORD God formed the man…” God is our creator! The Hebrew word for “formed” is “yatsar,” the term used when a potter molds clay. No wonder Isaiah spoke of God as a potter: “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8)
The idea is that God personally molded Man. He didn’t speak Man into existence; He personally crafted Man. Because of this truth, there is nothing to boast about ourselves because we are only created. This implies that Someone greater than us, incomparable because He is above us, exists. He is God and we are? “…of DUST FROM THE GROUND” (emphasis mine).
There is nothing spectacular in us. Our basic element is not even spectacular. When the Bible uses “dust” in a figurative sense, it means something of little worth or value. Yes, it exists, but it is next to nothing. Thus, before the life-giving work of God, Man was mere earth – a body of earth fashioned as Man.
This marks the beginning of a humble attention of ourselves. Often, we look into the mirror and vainly think we are special. There’s nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back, but there is definitely something wrong when one thinks they deserve the best things in life because they think they are the best. There’s something wrong if someone believes they are better-looking than the next person. We are all dust of the earth! Specifically created through this element so that we shall not boast but only be grateful to our Creator God. Only a humble admission of this reality will change our life and our relationship with others this new year. It may sound paradoxical, but it is what we need to reflect on.
